Almost 30,000 people have been illegally deprived of their liberty as a result of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine and are still considered missing under special circumstances.

This was stated by the representative of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the system of security and defence sector bodies, Oleksandr Kononenko, Kommersant ukrainskyihttps://www.komersant.info/ citing the press service of the Ombudsman’s Office of Ukraine.

“Currently, almost 30,000 people are considered missing under special circumstances and unlawfully deprived of their personal liberty as a result of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, according to the Unified Register of Persons Missing under Special Circumstances. The figure includes three categories: children, civilians and prisoners of war,” the statement said.

“Out of all the civilians illegally detained and convicted by Russia, about 1,600 people have been verified!” said Kononenko.

According to him, among those illegally detained by the Russian Federation are sick and vulnerable groups, as well as three OSCE staff members. However, the register is being updated and verified, so the number may be much higher.

As a reminder, the head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, said that the international organisation Red Cross had not been able to help a single Ukrainian prisoner of war during the two years of full-scale war.
