Shooting near Trump’s residence: what is known about the incident

A shooting occurred near a Secret Service checkpoint outside the White House in Washington. The shooter was identified as 21-year-old Nasir Best of Maryland. Officers wounded him while returning fire; his injuries were fatal. A bystander was also injured during the shooting. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the Associated Press.

According to media reports, an unidentified man approached the security checkpoint, pulled a gun from his bag, and opened fire on Secret Service agents. The officers returned fire; the suspect was wounded and later died in the hospital. At the time of the incident, U.S. President Donald Trump was at the White House; he was not injured.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 23 at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time (May 24 at 1:00 a.m. Kyiv time) near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in northwest Washington, D.C., next to one of the checkpoints near the White House.

The Secret Service clarified that none of its agents were injured.

A bystander was caught in the crossfire

A bystander was also wounded during the shooting. A Secret Service spokesperson told CNN that investigators are still determining the circumstances under which he was injured. He may have been struck by the suspect’s first shot or by one of the bullets during the ensuing exchange of fire.

According to CBS News, the suspect fired at a Secret Service security booth near the White House, and officers returned fire. According to the network’s sources, a total of 10 to 20 shots may have been fired.

White House spokesperson Stephen Chung wrote on X that Trump continues to work following the incident. CNN quotes his post, in which he stated that the president “cannot stop and will not stop.”

After the sounds of gunfire, the White House was briefly locked down. Journalists inside were ordered to take cover.

NBC News, citing reporter Julie Zirkin, reported that Secret Service agents directed members of the press to the briefing room. According to her, law enforcement officers were armed and quickly escorted journalists out of the open area.

Investigators are looking into the motive

The suspect in the shooting has been identified as 21-year-old Nasir Best of Maryland, Fox News and NBC News reported, citing sources.

Best had previously come to the attention of law enforcement and suffered from mental health issues. Fox News also reports that on June 26, 2025, he was detained by the Secret Service for threatening agents, and on July 10 of that year for trespassing in a restricted area.

The FBI has joined the investigation. Investigators are examining the suspect’s actions and the circumstances of the shooting. No official motive for the attack had been cited at the time of publication.

This is not the first incident involving the use of a firearm near White House-related sites in recent weeks. In early May, a shooting also occurred near the White House. At that time, the building was cordoned off, and journalists at the scene were gathered in a briefing room. Shots were fired at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue, near the White House and next to the Washington Monument.
