The Paris Court of Appeal has granted a petition filed by the lawyers of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to release him from prison and place him under judicial control.
This was reported by the BFMTV TV channel with reference to the court’s decision, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Under the terms of judicial control, he is prohibited from leaving the territory of France.
Sarkozy’s case is accompanied by loud discussions
Sarkozy, now 70 years old, was sentenced to five years in prison for admitting to a conspiracy related to the illegal financing of the 2007 presidential campaign. According to the investigation, the politician’s inner circle could have raised funds from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The former president has been held in La Sante prison since October 21, in a solitary confinement cell of about nine square meters, separately from other prisoners.
Due to his special status, he is guarded around the clock by two additional officers, which has led to protests by prison staff.
The situation has gained a great deal of publicity in French society and beyond, as Sarkozy became the first former head of state of an EU country to be imprisoned.
The hearing on the politician’s release followed similar proceedings against two other defendants in the case – mediator Alexandre Jouri, who was taken into custody last week, and ex-banker Waheeb Nasser, who was released in late October. The Court of Appeal had two months to consider Sarkozy’s defense motion after his detention.
