Thunderstorms Will Break the Heat Wave in Ukraine — Where to Expect Hail on August 18

On Tuesday, August 18, most regions of Ukraine will experience rain and thunderstorms. In the west, heavy rainfall, hail, and squalls with wind speeds of 15–20 meters per second are forecast in some areas. This is according to the forecast by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center for August 18–20, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"
The bad weather will largely bypass the east and southeast of the country, where dry and hot weather will persist. At the same time, the passage of a thunderstorm front on August 19 will bring a drop in temperatures across much of Ukraine.
Where will it rain on August 18?
Precipitation is expected overnight, primarily in the western regions. During the day, rain and thunderstorms will spread to almost all of Ukraine, except for the eastern and southeastern regions.
The most severe weather is forecast for the west, where heavy rain is possible in some areas. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by hail and a sudden increase in wind speed.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a separate warning about hazardous meteorological phenomena. A yellow danger level has been declared for the western and northern regions, as well as for the Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Odesa, and Mykolaiv regions.
Such weather conditions may disrupt transportation and the operations of energy, construction, and utility companies.
Ukraine will experience contrasting temperatures
Daytime temperatures will vary significantly depending on the region.
At night, temperatures in most regions are expected to range from 15° to 20°. During the day, temperatures in western Ukraine and Zhytomyr Oblast will reach only 20–25°.
In the rest of the country, temperatures will range from 28 to 33°. The hottest weather will persist in the eastern and southeastern regions, which will remain outside the main precipitation zone during the day.
The wind will be predominantly southerly, with speeds of 7–12 meters per second. In the western regions, it will shift to the northwest, which will help lower temperatures.
What will the weather be like in Kyiv?
In Kyiv and the Kyiv region, the night will pass without significant precipitation. Rain and thunderstorms are expected during the day, and in some areas, hail and squalls with speeds of 15–20 meters per second are possible.
Temperatures in Kyiv will range from 18 to 20° at night and around 28 to 30° during the day. Across the region, temperatures are forecast to range from 15° to 20° at night and 28 to 33° during the day.
Why the fire hazard persists even during rain
Despite the forecasted precipitation, an extreme fire danger level will persist throughout most of Ukraine on August 18–20. The exceptions will be the Volyn, Lviv, and Zakarpattia regions, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
Thunderstorms are likely to be brief and localized, so they will not provide sufficient moisture to the soil and dry vegetation throughout the regions.
Under these conditions, even a small open flame can cause a fire to spread rapidly. The State Emergency Service urges people not to burn dry grass, not to build campfires in forests, fields, or parks, and to call 101 if a fire is detected.
When the Heat Begins to Subside
As early as August 19, temperatures across most of Ukraine will drop. At night, rain and thunderstorms will persist in most northern, central, and southern regions, and during the day they will shift eastward and southeastward.
Nighttime temperatures will range from 10 to 18°, and daytime temperatures from 21 to 28°. Thus, in some regions, it will be a few degrees cooler compared to Tuesday.
On August 20, brief thunderstorms are forecast in some parts of the northern part of the country. The rest of the country will be mostly dry. Daytime temperatures will range from 21 to 28°, with temperatures reaching 32° only in the south.
