Cyberpolice warns: fraudsters massively reissue SIM cards to steal money

18 February 07:21

A fraudulent scheme involving the unauthorized reissue of SIM cards has intensified in Ukraine. Attackers gain control over the victim’s phone number, which allows them to hack into bank accounts, apply for loans, and access personal data. This is reported by the official Telegram channel of the Cyber Police Department, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

How the fraudulent scheme works

According to the cyber police, scammers use social engineering techniques, phishing sites, and forged documents to fraudulently obtain a new SIM card in the victim’s name. In some cases, they even call potential victims, posing as employees of the mobile operator to lure out personal data.

Once the SIM card is successfully reissued, the fraudsters intercept SMS confirmation codes from banks and other services, allowing them to access the victims’ financial accounts.

How to protect yourself from SIM card reissue without your knowledge

Cyberpolice advises following a few simple safety rules:

  1. Do not give out personal data over the phone. If you receive a call purporting to be from a mobile operator and asking for a verification code or other confidential information, end the conversation immediately.
  2. Do not allow remote SIM card reissue. Check with your mobile operator to see if you can activate this feature so that you can change your SIM card only in person at the office with your passport.
  3. Use a separate number for financial transactions. Avoid sharing this number on social media and do not list it in ads.
  4. Be careful with suspicious calls. If you receive several calls from unknown numbers asking you to call back, it may be part of a fraudulent scheme.
  5. Consider contract service. SIM cards registered to a passport are more difficult to reissue without the owner’s knowledge.

What to do if you become a victim of fraud

If you notice suspicious activity or lose access to your number, act immediately:

  • Immediately contact your mobile operator and report that your sim card has been reissued without your knowledge. Ask to temporarily block the number.
  • If you suspect that fraudsters have gained access to your bank account, contact your bank and block your cards and online access.
  • Check access to your social media and email accounts. If you suspect a hack, change your passwords.
  • If fraudsters have gained access to your accounts, inform your friends and acquaintances so that they do not fall into the trap (for example, if fraudsters ask for money on your behalf).
  • Contact law enforcement agencies to report the fraud or submit an electronic appeal to the cyber police via the link.

Cyberpolice urges citizens to be careful and not to transfer confidential information to unknown persons. Following basic cybersecurity rules will help you avoid financial losses and protect your personal data.
