The last maternity ward in Donetsk Oblast is closing: what happened

9 June 13:56

The only maternity hospital in the Donetsk region, which was operating in Sloviansk, is closing. Vadym Lyakh, head of the Sloviansk City Council, announced this during a televised marathon, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to Lyakh, one of the aerial bombs fell about 200 meters from the maternity hospital, causing damage to the building.

“Unfortunately, a bomb fell 200 meters from the maternity hospital. It was also damaged, but fortunately, no one inside was injured. The maternity ward will be temporarily closed,” said community head Vadym Lyakh during a televised broadcast.

Lyakh clarified that no one was injured directly in the maternity hospital, but they decided to suspend operations in the maternity ward for safety reasons.

Consequently, expectant mothers from the Donetsk region will have to plan their deliveries outside the region in advance, as it is no longer safe to give birth in Sloviansk.

What is known about the strike on Sloviansk

The Russian army carried out an airstrike on Sloviansk on the afternoon of June 8. According to Suspilne, the occupying forces attacked the city with three FAB-250 bombs from a UMPK. As a result of the shelling, nine civilians were wounded, including a 17-year-old girl.

The victims were diagnosed with blast injuries, traumatic brain injuries, concussions, shrapnel wounds, closed fractures, lacerations, and contusions.

According to Vadym Lyakh, Russian strikes in Sloviansk have damaged about 50% of apartment buildings and less than 20% of private homes.

Why this is particularly important

The closure of the maternity ward in Sloviansk means that there is no longer a safe place to give birth anywhere in Donetsk Oblast.

This exacerbates the already dire humanitarian situation in the region, especially for pregnant women who remain near the front lines.
