Transcarpathia is preparing a new gateway to the EU: details of the international project

An international project has been launched in Zakarpattia aimed at preparing for the opening of a new border crossing point between Ukraine and Romania. The project involves the “Yablunivka–Remeta (Kaminitsa)” road border crossing, as well as the reconstruction of the road that will provide access to the future border crossing. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in the Zakarpattia region.
The project will run from May 28, 2026, to November 27, 2027.
“The overall goal of the project is to create the technical, institutional, and cross-border foundation for the future opening of a new border crossing point by developing feasibility studies and strengthening cooperation between relevant regional and national stakeholders,” — notes the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in Zakarpattia Oblast.
As part of its scope of work, the Restoration Service is to develop a feasibility study for the construction of the “Yablunivka” road border crossing point and the T-07-37 Khust – Shayan – Vyshkovo – Bushtyno, specifically the 9.4-km section leading up to the future checkpoint.

The project will also include the construction of a service area.
It is expected that the implementation of this initiative will help improve transportation links with Romania and bring border infrastructure planning closer to EU standards.
How much does the project cost?
The total project budget is 842,418.46 euros, of which 758,176.60 euros is a grant from the European Union.
The project has already been registered with the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and received international technical assistance registration card No. 6609.
It is noted that the project is being implemented as part of the Interreg VI-A NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027 program with financial support from the European Union and is co-financed by the countries participating in the program. The Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in Zakarpattia Oblast has become a partner in the project.
The lead partner of the project is the Transcarpathian Regional Development Agency. The second partner is the Maramures County Council in Romania, and the third is the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in Transcarpathian Oblast.
