A video about the alleged design of the “new 5000 hryvnia banknote” is being circulated on the Internet and in some media. The NBU stated that the video does not show a real banknote, but a presentation souvenir produced as part of an advertising campaign.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the regulator’s press service.
“The video shows a presentation item “Panteleimon Kulish” made in 2008 to demonstrate the technological capabilities of the National Bank of Ukraine’s Banknote Mint,” the NBU stated.
According to the NBU, this product is a printed product manufactured by the NBU Mint, but it is not a banknote – it does not contain the denomination and the name/designation of the Ukrainian currency “hryvnia”, and therefore cannot be put into circulation as a means of payment, and it is not planned to do so.
“The product bears the inscriptions “PRESENTATION”, “CANNOT BE USED AS A MEANS OF PAYMENT”. Other banknote producers (central banks) also issue similar products for marketing purposes,” the NBU said.
It is also noted that the NBU is not currently developing a design for a 5000 hryvnia banknote. If the NBU decides to update the hryvnia denomination range, it will inform the public in a timely manner.
