Built for Poseidon: Russia launches Khabarovsk nuclear submarine

2 November 08:17

The nuclear submarine Khabarovsk was launched at the shipyard of the Sevmash Production Association in Severodvinsk (Arkhangelsk region), the Russian Defense Ministry reported "Komersant Ukrainian".

The event was held under the leadership of the head of the department, Andrei Belousov.

He emphasized that the Khabarovsk will help ensure “the security of Russia’s maritime borders and protect its national interests in various parts of the world’s oceans.”

According to Russian media, the new submarine is allegedly capable of carrying up to 12 unmanned nuclear Poseidon torpedoes. Russia claims that these systems can hit targets anywhere in the world’s oceans.

Belousov added that the cruiser “still has to go through a cycle of sea trials.”

It should be noted that the Khabarovsk cruiser is designed for long-range strategic operations and can be based in the open ocean, performing tasks as part of Russia’s nuclear arsenal.

The Poseidon is an autonomous nuclear submarine torpedo that Russia positions as an extremely powerful and maneuverable weapon. According to Moscow, the torpedoes can travel long distances underwater and hit targets across the world’s oceans, including coastal targets.

The Khabarovsk submarine was designed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering. It is designed to meet the tasks of the Navy using modern naval underwater weapons, including robotic means for various purposes.

Tests of “Poseidon”

This week, Russia tested the Poseidon underwater vehicle, a nuclear-powered missile. According to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, there is no way to intercept it in the world.
