24 May 10:12
During the massive attack on the night of May 24, the Shevchenkivskyi district of the capital suffered significant damage once again. In addition to the virtual destruction of the Lukyanivsky Market and a massive fire at the Kvadrat shopping center, the shock wave and debris once again ravaged the building of the legendary McDonald’s restaurant located near the Lukyanivska metro station, writes
This restaurant holds special significance for Kyiv and the entire country, as it was the first restaurant in the chain to open in Ukraine in 1997.

The location near the metro station is a major transportation hub where debris from downed missiles and drones regularly lands, or where ballistic strikes directly hit the surrounding infrastructure.
- The first four times: Between 2022 and 2024, the restaurant sustained minor to moderate damage on multiple occasions (primarily shattered windows, a damaged facade, and roof elements) due to attacks on the Lukyanivska metro area.
- The fifth strike (January 18, 2025): This was one of the most severe. On that occasion, Russia struck the area with ballistic missiles. The interior, the staff training center on the second floor, refrigeration equipment, and the “McDrive” terminals were seriously damaged. It took the company nearly a month to completely renovate the establishment and reopen it on February 13.
- Sixth strike (July 21, 2025): Following another nighttime airstrike, the restaurant again sustained damage to its glass facade, but quickly reopened to customers that very morning.
- Seventh strike (the night of May 24, 2026): This time, the epicenter of the explosion was too close—at the neighboring market and in the “Kvadrat” shopping center. As a result of the massive blast wave, the restaurant’s facade systems were destroyed again, and the interior ceiling finishes and kitchen equipment were damaged.
Despite the regular and massive financial losses the company suffers due to Russian aggression, the chain manages to avoid the worst—casualties among its employees.
As during previous heavy shelling (notably in January of last year), during the nighttime alert on May 24, the restaurant staff and security personnel quickly assessed the situation and moved to the nearest underground shelter in time.
According to official reports, no one on the restaurant’s staff was injured.
Currently, McDonald’s Ukraine is assessing the extent of damage to equipment and is keeping the restaurant closed until a full structural inspection of the building is completed.
How it all began: eight-hour lines and miracle burgers in 1997
It’s hard to imagine today, but the opening of McDonald’s in Lukyanivka on May 24, 1997, was an event of almost global significance for Kyiv at the time. Ukraine became the 102nd country where the global corporation had expanded, and Lukyanivka was chosen as the site for the first location of the American fast-food chain.
Back then, in the late ’90s, it wasn’t just about grabbing a “quick bite.” A trip to “McD’s” was considered a real celebration and a chance to get out and about. On opening day, a massive line formed near the metro station, stretching for hundreds of meters.

People stood in line for 4–8 hours just to get inside. Some bought a single hamburger for the whole family, cut it into pieces, and then washed the branded plastic cups and paper bags with the logo for a long time afterward, keeping them at home as souvenirs.
For Kyiv residents who had just emerged from the poverty of the early years of independence, this restaurant became a taste of authentic Western life, a symbol of openness to the world, and the beginning of a new era.
This year, the restaurant turned 29.
