“Dark capital”: what Kyiv residents suggest to save electricity

12 November 15:19

A petition has appeared on the website of the Kyiv City Council, in which residents of the capital call on the authorities to turn off street lighting and light advertising at night – from midnight to five in the morning, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The authors of the initiative believe that such a step will save electricity at no additional cost to the city.

What is the situation with electricity in the capital?

The proposal comes amid ongoing problems with power supply in the capital. Following massive attacks by Russian troops on the energy infrastructure, Kyiv has been subject to stricter blackout schedules. In some areas, the restrictions last for several hours a day, hampering transportation, hospitals and businesses.

What decisions were made in previous blackouts?

In previous years, similar decisions have already been made at the local level: the lighting of bridges and buildings in Kyiv was turned off after a full-scale invasion. This time, the proposal concerns a systemic shutdown during the curfew, when movement in the city is prohibited and the lighting has no practical function.

In order for the initiative to be considered by the Kyiv City Council, the petition must collect 6,000 signatures. If it is supported, the mayor’s office may consider introducing a nighttime “economy mode” on a permanent basis, at least until the power system is stabilized.
