Trump makes a new statement about the end of the war in Ukraine

On February 24, US President Donald Trump said that negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine are “going very well.” The American leader wrote about this on his page on the social network Truth Social.

Donald Trump noted that he had a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron in the Oval Office of the White House. The meeting, during which the leaders of the two countries spoke, was convened by the current chairman of the G7, Justin Trudeau. It was timed to coincide with the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which, according to the American president, would never have happened if he had been in office in February 2022.

“I’m having serious discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war and also about major economic development deals that will take place between the United States and Russia. The talks are going very well!” – trump wrote.

He also emphasized the importance of the “Minerals and Rare Earth Metals Agreement” between the United States and Ukraine. Trump expressed hope that it would be signed in the near future. According to the American president, the agreement will be beneficial for Ukraine’s economy, which will quickly need to recover after the war.

What is known about the negotiations between the US and Russia

In February 2025, diplomatic relations between the United States and Russia underwent significant changes. The two countries sat down at the negotiating table to resolve the war in Ukraine.

on February 12, 2025, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation. During the hour-and-a-half conversation, the parties agreed on the need for an early cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and a transition to peace negotiations. Trump emphasized the importance of an immediate ceasefire, while Putin focused on “addressing the root causes of the conflict.” Both leaders expressed readiness for a face-to-face meeting for further discussion, presumably in Saudi Arabia. After speaking with the Russian president, Donald Trump also contacted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, informing him of the details of the discussion and emphasizing his desire to achieve peace.

on February 18, 2025, the first direct talks between US and Russian officials took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The American delegation was headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the Russian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to end the fighting in Ukraine and restore bilateral relations. As a result of the talks, the parties agreed to set up a joint working group to support peace initiatives and consider opportunities for economic cooperation in the event of peace. However, the absence of Ukrainian representatives at the meeting caused concern in Kyiv and among European allies, who fear possible decisions without the participation of the Ukrainian side.

The initiative of direct talks between the United States and Russia without Ukraine’s participation has provoked a mixed reaction in the international arena. European leaders expressed concern about possible concessions that could be made at the expense of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need to ensure Ukraine’s security in any peace agreement. At the same time, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed his support for Ukraine and its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, especially after Trump’s critical remarks about the Ukrainian leader.

Inside the United States, the Trump administration’s approach to resolving the conflict in Ukraine has also become a subject of debate. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that the war in Ukraine was not “necessarily provoked by Russia,” pointing to discussions about Ukraine’s possible accession to NATO as a factor that caused Moscow’s concern. Such statements have drawn criticism from those who believe they could undermine support for Ukraine and play into the hands of Russian propaganda.
