The market and the “Kvadrat” shopping center were destroyed by fire; one of Kyiv’s oldest McDonald’s restaurants was damaged
24 May 09:10
On the night of May 23–24, Russian occupiers launched yet another massive attack on the capital. All 10 districts came under fire. As a result of the enemy strikes, infrastructure in the area around the Lukyanivska metro station sustained significant damage. This location, which has already been targeted by shelling on multiple occasions, suffered extensive damage this time—the retail spaces that provided jobs and served thousands of Kyiv residents were virtually destroyed. "Komersant Ukrainian" reports on the consequences of the nighttime attack in the Shevchenkivskyi district of the capital.
The epicenter of the destruction and subsequent fire was the Lukyanivsky Market and the nearby “Kvadrat” shopping center. A powerful fire broke out as a result of the strike and flying debris, which almost completely destroyed the market’s shopping arcades and the interior of the shopping center.

“Kvadrat” shopping center:
The fire damaged a significant portion of the building, completely shattering the glass facades, windows, and entrance areas. Well-known chain stores such as “Silpo,” “Prostor,” and “Aurora,” which operated within the complex, reportedly suffered serious material damage due to the fire, smoke, and flooding during firefighting efforts.
Lukyanivsky Market:
The market pavilions were completely gutted by fire. State Emergency Service rescuers worked for a long time to extinguish the fire and clear the debris to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring residential buildings.
McDonald’s
The legendary McDonald’s restaurant (which has been operating in Lukyanivka since 1997 and is the chain’s first location in Ukraine) was once again damaged by the shock wave and debris.
According to company representatives, the restaurant’s facade, ceiling, and interior were damaged. Expensive kitchen equipment and “McDrive” terminals were also damaged.
Fortunately, no restaurant employees were injured.
Due to its immediate proximity to the epicenter of the explosion, the ground-level infrastructure of the Lukyanivska metro station was also damaged—the blast wave shattered the glass elements of the entrance. The station was promptly closed to passengers while debris was cleared and safety checks were conducted.
In addition, falling debris damaged the tram tracks on Dehtiarivska Street, where a crater formed, temporarily blocking public electric transport. Utility crews are on site to restore service.
Law enforcement and rescue workers continue to assess the consequences of yet another war crime committed by the Russian Federation.
The exact number of casualties and the extent of financial losses for businesses in the capital are currently being determined.
