Day of Standardisation and Metrology of Ukraine
Since 2002, Ukraine has celebrated the Day of Standardisation and Metrology Workers on 10 October.
This holiday was introduced by the President of Ukraine to recognise the significant contribution of standardisation and metrology specialists to the country’s economic development.
October was not chosen for the celebration by chance. This month in 1901, on the initiative of chemist Mendeleev, a chamber was opened in Kharkiv to verify and mark commercial weights and measures.
European and World Day Against the Death Penalty
The initiative to establish this day was put forward in 2002, but it was officially recognised only in 2007 after the Council of Europe approved it.
In Ukraine, a moratorium on the death penalty was declared in 1995. However, the failure to follow due process in adopting it led to a return to executions. The final decision on this issue was made in 1999. At that time, Ukraine had already become a member of the Council of Europe, and the moratorium was one of the main requirements for joining the organisation.
The purpose of this day is to draw public attention to the problems of the execution of prisoners in some countries. Nowadays, this is a cruel and inhuman punishment that should be abolished in all countries of the world.
World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day or Mental Health Day is celebrated annually on 10 October in the world and in Ukraine.
The holiday is intended to draw attention to the problems associated with a person’s mental state and to support people with such diseases.
The main goal of this celebration is to reduce the prevalence of diseases associated with mental disorders: depression, phobias, personality disorders, alcohol and drug addiction, schizophrenia, dementia, impaired consciousness, etc.
World Sight Day
World Sight Day is an important annual event that the global community celebrates on the second Thursday of October. It was launched in 1999 at the initiative of the WHO.
The event is dedicated to the problems of combating ophthalmic diseases, providing quality medical care to detect disorders at early stages.
World Day of the Homeless
World Homeless Day has been celebrated annually on 10 October since 2010.
The main objective of this day is to draw public attention to the problems of people who, for various social and domestic reasons, find themselves homeless. The idea of this holiday arose during online communication between caring people from different countries.
What is the church holiday today?
on 10 October, the church calendar marks the day of remembrance of Eulampius and Eulampia, who were brother and sister and were born into a wealthy family in Nicodemus. Eulampius was the first to convert to Christianity. When the emperor issued an order to purge the city of Christians, he disregarded it and called it ridiculous. The young man was immediately captured and brought to trial. There he proved himself to be a faithful Christian and endured all the torture.
Sister Evlampia learned of her brother’s suffering and ran to the court. There she also declared her Christian faith, and then added that she was ready to endure all the suffering with her brother. The pagans decided to put the brother and sister in a cauldron and burn them in a furnace, but they remained unharmed. Then the ruler ordered the boy’s head to be cut off, and the girl died of grief when she saw it.
