Ukraine has held the first round of talks with the UK on a bilateral agreement on the transition to a stronger and deeper partnership. This was reported by the press service of the Office of the President of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The new agreement should become a historic document on the 100-year partnership between the two countries. It will be based on the provisions of the 2020 Agreement on Political Cooperation, Free Trade and Strategic Partnership and the 2024 Agreement on Security Cooperation.

“The new document should contain even more ambitious goals for our cooperation. We aim to enshrine unprecedented provisions in all areas of mutual interest: from security to economy, from energy to culture and art,”

– said Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Ihor Zhovkva during the talks.

The Ukrainian side hopes for a successful conclusion of the negotiations and signing of the agreement by the President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the near future.

Ukraine – United Kingdom

on 12 January 2024, a security agreement between Ukraine and the United Kingdom, officially known as the “Agreement on Security Cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”, was signed in Kyiv. The document was signed by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak. The agreement entered into force upon signature and will be valid for 10 years with the possibility of extension.

This international agreement provides Ukraine with security guarantees and includes intelligence sharing, cyber security, medical and military training, and defence and industrial cooperation. The UK is committed to providing comprehensive assistance to Ukraine to protect and restore its territorial integrity, prevent and counter military escalation by Russia, and support Ukraine’s integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions.

This agreement is the first final security assurance agreement concluded by Ukraine since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion and is seen as an important step in ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security.

Previously, the UK was a signatory to the Budapest Memorandum, in which it guaranteed Ukraine’s safety and security in exchange for nuclear disarmament.
