23-year-old Taras Khmara, the youngest son of the famous Ukrainian dissident, Hero of Ukraine and politician Stepan Khmara, has taken up arms to defend Ukraine.
Raisa Shmatko, the head of the All-Ukrainian Women’s Movement for a Free Ukraine, announced his mobilization on Facebook, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“Today we gathered our Taras Khmara to the front. He firmly, with a steady mind, decided that this is his duty and he will fulfill it with honor. Son, may God protect you always and everywhere, and we will come soon,” she wrote.
In her comments, Taras’s mother, Roksoliana Khmara, thanked for her son’s support. The family did not disclose any details about his place of service or the unit he was assigned to.
Stepan Khmara, a longtime political prisoner of the Soviet regime, MP of several convocations and an active participant in the Ukrainian national liberation movement, died on February 21, 2024, at the age of 86. He was a symbol of the struggle for Ukraine’s independence and one of the most consistent critics of the Soviet and post-Soviet totalitarian system.
The politician is survived by three children: the eldest, 58-year-old Roman and 52-year-old Solomiia from his first wife Halyna (who died in 2000), and his youngest son Taras, born in his second marriage to Roksoliana Khmara.
Thus, the Khmara family continues to fight for Ukraine at a new historical stage – now on the front lines of the war with Russia.
