By the evening of Monday, September 22, about 40 thousand pilgrims, including 38 thousand foreigners, had already arrived in Uman to celebrate the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah. This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

How the police ensure order in Uman

According to the head of the National Police, Ivan Vygovsky, the main task of law enforcement officers is to protect public order and prevent crime.

There is a consolidated detachment in the city, which includes:

  • operatives and investigators,
  • patrol police,
  • dialogue police,
  • a special purpose battalion,
  • dog handlers and explosive experts,
  • rescuers of the State Emergency Service,
  • and the National Guard.

A control regime is in place at the entrances to the pilgrimage area. Police officers are checking people’s documents, inspecting vehicles, and controlling the streets, where foot and car crews are patrolling around the clock.

Assistance from the Israeli police

This year, Israeli police officers also arrived in Uman. They are helping their Ukrainian colleagues to ensure law and order during the Rosh Hashanah celebrations.

The representative of the Israeli police in Ukraine and the CIS, Paul Tymkovsky, thanked Ukrainian law enforcement officers for their high level of training and noted that Israeli colleagues would remain in the city until the end of the celebrations.

What is known about the Hasidic pilgrimage

Every year, thousands of Hasidim come to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah at the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav.

This year, the Jewish New Year is celebrated from September 22 to 24.
