85 media workers killed since the beginning of full-scale Russian aggression: list

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the occupiers have killed at least 85 media workers. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyin https://www.komersant.info/citing data as of 26 March 2024 from the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.

According to the verified data of the NUJU and the International Federation of Journalists, the dead include 16 media professionals who performed their professional duties; 9 civilian victims; and 60 media representatives who mobilised to defend Ukraine in the ranks of the Ukrainian Defence Forces.

Civilian media professionals who died while performing their professional duties:

  1. Ihor Gudenko, Ukrainian photographer and video blogger, disappeared in Kharkiv on 26 February 2022 during shelling, his body was found on 27 February 2022. According to the conclusion of doctors, his death was not violent.
  2. YevhenSakun, a Ukrainian photojournalist for LIVE and EFE, died as a result of a rocket attack on the Kyiv TV tower on 1 March 2022.
  3. Reno Brent Anthony, American journalist, former correspondent for The New York Times, Time reporter, documentary filmmaker, Peabody Award winner, shot dead by Russian soldiers at a checkpoint in Irpin on 13 March 2022.
  4. Levin Maksym, Ukrainian photojournalist, correspondent for LB.ua and other publications, went missing on 13 March 2022, found dead near the village of Huta-Mezhyhirska, Kyiv region, on 1 April 2022. An investigation by Reporters Without Borders found that he had been tortured and executed.
  5. Zakrzewski Pierre, an Irish photojournalist for Fox News, died on 14 March 2022, along with Oleksandra Kuvshynova, when their car came under fire in the village of Horenka, Kyiv region.
  6. Oleksandra Kuvshynova, Ukrainian journalist, fixer, producer of Fox News, died on 14 March 2022, together with Pierre Zakrzewski, when their car came under fire in the village of Horenka, Kyiv region.
  7. Oksana Baulina, a Russian journalist for The Insider, an activist of the Alexei Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation, died on 23 March 2022 under Russian shelling in Kyiv.
  8. Kvedaravičius Mantas, Lithuanian film director and documentary filmmaker, killed on 2 April 2022 while trying to leave the city of Mariupol, where he had been documenting life for many years.
  9. Bal Yevhen, Ukrainian journalist, writer, veteran of the Soviet submarine fleet, volunteer, died on 2 April 2022 after being tortured by the Russian military in Mariupol.
  10. Nezhyborets Roman, Ukrainian media worker, video engineer of the Chernihiv-based Dytinets TV channel, killed in the village of Yahidne near Chernihiv in early April 2022.
  11. Zamoyskyi Zoreslav, Ukrainian journalist of the publications ‘Gromada Pryirpinia’ and ‘Informatsionnyi Portal’, his body with signs of violent death was found on 13 April 2022 in Bucha, Kyiv region.
  12. Leclerc-Imhoff Frédéric, a French journalist for BFMTV, died of shrapnel wounds on 30 May 2022 as a result of Russian shelling while covering the evacuation of civilians from Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk region).
  13. Bohdan Bitik, a Ukrainian freelancer, was killed by a Russian bullet near Antonivskyi Bridge in Kherson on 26 April 2023 while assisting Italian journalist Corrado Zunino.
  14. Soldin Armand, a French video journalist for AFP, died on 9 May 2023 under rocket fire near Chasovyi Yar, Donetsk region, while preparing a TV report.
  15. Amelina Victoria, Ukrainian writer and war crimes documentarian, died on 1 July 2023 as a result of injuries sustained during a rocket attack by Russians on the centre of Kramatorsk on 27 June 2023.
  16. Volodymyr Myroniuk, a Ukrainian and American freelance photojournalist, died while filming a photo report on 25 September 2023 in Donbas near Kurdyumivka.

Journalists who died not in the line of duty:

  1. Shakirov Dilerbek, Ukrainian journalist of the news weekly ‘Vokrug Tym’, member of the ‘House of Hope’ Charity Foundation, shot dead with an automatic weapon on 26 February in Zelenivka, Kherson region.
  2. Li Pavlo, Ukrainian actor, presenter of the Dom TV channel, volunteer, shot dead on 6 March 2022 in Irpin, Kyiv region, by the Russian military.
  3. Viktor Dedov, a Ukrainian cameraman for the Sigma TV channel, died on 11 March 2022 in Mariupol as a result of a shelling of his home.
  4. Oksana Haidar (“Red Lady”), Ukrainian journalist and blogger, died during the shelling of the village of Shevchenkove, Brovary district, Kyiv region, by Russian artillery between 11 and 12 March 2022.
  5. Liliia Humianova, Ukrainian journalist, journalism teacher and head of the art department of the Livoberezhnyi District House of Children and Youth Creativity, died on 19 March 2022 as a result of Russian shelling of Mariupol.
  6. Kharakoz Natalia, Ukrainian journalist, writer in Greek and Russian, died as a result of the Russian bombardment of Mariupol on 29 March 2022.
  7. Valeriia Glodan, a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism at Mechnikov Odesa National University, was on maternity leave, killed with her mother and 3-month-old daughter on 23 April 2022 as a result of a rocket attack on Odesa.
  8. Gyrych Vira, Ukrainian journalist, producer of Radio Liberty, died as a result of the Russian shelling of Kyiv on 28 April 2022.
  9. Datsenko Volodymyr, Ukrainian public figure, volunteer, Aidar soldier, journalist for the publication ‘Road Control Vinnytsia’, died on 14 July 2022 during a rocket attack on Vinnytsia.

Journalists who died during military service:

  1. Pushchenko Serhii, Ukrainian artist, cultural critic, journalist, serviceman, died on 2 March 2022 in a battle in Vasylkiv, Kyiv region, together with his fellow soldiers.
  2. Dudar Viktor, a Ukrainian military journalist, a soldier of the 80th Air Assault Brigade, died on 6 March 2022 during the defence of the city of Mykolaiv.
  3. Lytkin Oleksandr, a Ukrainian journalist with KNK Media, died on 13 March in Romanivka near Irpin, Kyiv region, as a result of Russian shelling by military personnel.
  4. Yakunin Oleh, Ukrainian journalist, editor of the Zaporizhzhia-based website misto.zp.ua, a serviceman, died on 18 March 2022.
  5. Kotsukon Oleksandr, Ukrainian journalist, employee of the military press service, fighter of the Azov Regiment, student of the Department of Journalism, Advertising and PR Technologies of the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Cherkasy National University, died on 22 March 2022 during the defence of Mariupol.
  6. Oliynyk Yuriy, Ukrainian cameraman and photographer for Channel 24, a serviceman, died on 23 March 2022 in the fighting near Popasna, Luhansk region.
  7. Zaikovskyi Serhii, Ukrainian historian, translator, publicist, serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 24 March 2022 near Kyiv.
  8. Denys Kotenko, Ukrainian journalist, employee of the press service of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, died on 24 March 2022 in a battle with the Russian occupiers near Kyiv.
  9. Maksym Medynskyi, Ukrainian journalist, employee of the press service of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 29 April 2022 near Kharkiv as a result of artillery shelling by the occupiers.
  10. Makhov Oleksandr, Ukrainian journalist for the TV channels ‘Ukraine’, ‘Ukraine24’, ‘Dom’, a veteran of the war in Donbas, a serviceman, died in a battle near Izium, Kharkiv region, on 4 May 2022.
  11. Starynets Yevhen, Ukrainian media professional, manager of the Suspilne Cherkasy TV and radio company, founder of Suspilne in Cherkasy region, died on 30 April 2022 in the battle for Popasna.
  12. Kots Kostiantyn, Ukrainian photographer, cameraman of the Avers channel in Lutsk, a fighter in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died in Donetsk region on 17 May 2022 as a result of artillery shelling.
  13. Zhuk Roman, a Ukrainian photographer and videographer from Mukachevo, one of the founders of the volunteer project Chysto.de, a member of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 26 May 2022.
  14. Vitalii Derekh, Ukrainian journalist, correspondent for Ternopil publications, junior sergeant, commander of the anti-tank unit of the 1st Ivan Bohun Separate Mechanised Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 28 May 2022 near Popasna, Luhansk region, as a result of an air strike.
  15. Chubashev Oleksiy, Ukrainian journalist, military correspondent, author and host of the programme for the military “Recruit.UA”, former head of Army FM, died at the front on 10 June 2022 during the defence of Sievierodonetsk.
  16. Gulamov Abdulkarim (Karim), Ukrainian journalist, TV presenter of the M2 channel, serviceman, died on 17 July 2022, probably under shelling.
  17. Mykola Rachok, Ukrainian journalist, author of materials and news editor of the InfoCar publication, died on 21 July 2022 in a battle with Wagnerites.
  18. Oleksiy Yurchenko, a Ukrainian journalist, cameraman of the Pryamyi TV channel, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 8 September 2022 during the liberation of Balakliya, Kharkiv region.
  19. Dmytro Shipovskyi, Ukrainian TV and film cameraman, in recent years he worked with Privat TV: Kharkiv” and “Al Jazeera” TV channel, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 21 September 2022 under mortar fire from Russian occupiers near the village of Druzhba, Donetsk region.
  20. Leliavskyi Yurii, a Ukrainian journalist, TV worker, captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, head of the public relations service of the 80th separate airborne assault brigade of the Airborne Forces of Ukraine, died on 28 September 2022 in a battle with the Russian occupiers.
  21. Sylkin Serhii, Ukrainian media professional, former sound engineer of Suspilne Ivano-Frankivsk, a fighter with the 10th separate mountain assault brigade, died on 17 October 2022 in a battle near Bakhmut, Donetsk region.
  22. Yavorsky Vasyl, director of the First Western and Espresso TV channels, a serviceman of the 103rd Separate Brigade of the TRO Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 21 October 2022 as a result of artillery shelling.
  23. Zagoruyko Andriy, a journalist and director of the Kyiv TV channel, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 3 November 2022 in the village of Spirne near Bakhmut as a result of mortar and artillery shelling.
  24. Dzikovsky Vladislav, system administrator of the Detector Media publication, a serviceman, senior machine gunner of an armoured vehicle, went missing between Kreminna and Serebryanka on 13 December 2022. In early April 2023, it became known that he had died.
  25. Kolomiyets Anton, a TV journalist from Kherson, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 20 December 2022 near Bakhmut as a result of artillery shelling.
  26. Kuzenkov Oleksandr, a Ukrainian soldier, a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, author of the book “The Last Smiles of Ilovaisk”, died on 20 December 2022 in a battle near Bakhmut.
  27. Yevhen Hulevych, Lviv journalist, cultural critic, head of the Centre for Humanitarian Studies at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, a fighter with the Air Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 31 December 2022 near Bakhmut.
  28. Kudriavtsev Dmytro, Ukrainian soldier, former editor of the news feed of the ICTV Facts website, died during a rocket attack on 25 January 2023 near the village of Vodiane near Donetsk.
  29. Teriokhin Ihor, Odesa journalist (worked for RIAK TV channel and Glas Media Group), writer, restaurateur, fighter of the 126th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 23 January in Kherson region.
  30. Pavlo Tymoshenko, cameraman of the Cherkasy branch of the Inter TV channel, a territorial defence serviceman, died on 5 February 2023 near Vuhledar.
  31. Klymenko Serhiy, a technical service worker of the Suspilne Kherson TV channel, a Ukrainian serviceman, died on 5 February 2023 in a battle in Maryinka, Donetsk region.
  32. Borys Oleksiy, a journalist with the Yurydychna Gazeta, a fighter with the 58th Brigade, died on 9 February 2023.
  33. Olkhovyk Oleksiy, a cameraman for Suspilne, a Ukrainian serviceman, died as a result of a fatal wound, allegedly during a firefight on 13 March 2023.
  34. Tsakhniv Oleksandr, an investigative journalist with the Vchasno news agency from Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 25 March 2023 during shelling in the Bakhmut direction.
  35. Andrii Boiko, former cameraman of the Vezha TV and Radio Company, co-founder of the creative agency YANG .agency, commander of the rifle platoon of the 102nd Brigade named after Dmytro Vitovskyi, died on 6 April 2023 during a shelling near Huliaypol, Zaporizhzhia region.

  40. Kuzminskyi Ivan, researcher of ancient Ukrainian music, PhD, director of the Maliatko TV children’s TV channel, serviceman, died on 17 May 2023 in a battle near the village of Dibrova in the Luhansk region.
  41. Osievskyi Yevhen, journalist, author of the Kunsht and Spilne publications, a serviceman, died on 22 May 2023 in a battle near Bakhmut.
  42. Petrov Viktor, first editor-in-chief of the online publication Sykhiv Media, a serviceman, died on 29 May 2023 in the fighting in the Bakhmut direction.
  43. Tsurukin Petro, a TV journalist, editor-in-chief of the One for All project on STB TV channel, host of Kyiv Live TV channel, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, went missing on 4 June 2023, his death was confirmed and officially reported on 18 March 2024.
  44. Chornomaz Roman, a photographer and journalist from Uman, Cherkasy region, a sniper with the Svoboda battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine, died on 13 June 2023 in a battle in the Bakhmut area.
  45. Shulha Ivan, sound engineer of the STB TV channel, musician, a serviceman of the 241st Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 14 June 2023 near the village of Zakitne, Kramatorsk district, Donetsk region.
  46. Anton Klitnyi, journalist of the Stopkor news portal, founder of the 25.info news agency, public figure, serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 25 June 2023 from shrapnel wounds in a battle near Orikhiv.

  50. Dmytro Sinchenko, a journalist, blogger from Kropyvnytskyi, author of the publications Tyzhden, Radio Svoboda and others, a public activist, a member of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, went missing in late August 2023, and in early March 2024, DNA testing confirmed his death.
  51. Kryshtal Andriy, editor-in-chief of the Lviv newspaper ‘Samooborona’, a soldier of the 103rd separate territorial defence brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After being seriously injured, he was undergoing treatment. He died on 27 September 2023.
  52. Taras Davydiuk, founder and editor-in-chief of the publication “Horyn.info” from Rivne region, a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 3 November 2023 on the outskirts of Robotyn, Zaporizhzhia region, as a result of an attack by an enemy drone.
  53. Popov Oleksandr, a former cameraman of Suspilne Mykolaiv, a serviceman of the 95th separate airborne assault brigade, died on 22 November 2023 while defending Kupiansk, Kharkiv region.
  54. Yatsiuk Denys, Ukrainian soldier, former cameraman of the Dnipro-based Channel 51 TV channel, member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, died on 14 December 2023 near Avdiivka, Donetsk region.
  55. Roman Ryazhskikh, Ukrainian journalist, copywriter, serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, seriously wounded during a shelling near Mariinka in Donetsk region on 4 January 2024, died in the Mechnikov Dnipro Regional Clinical Hospital on 6 January 2024.
  56. Kryvtsov Maksym, Ukrainian poet from Rivne, media specialist, junior sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died on 7 January 2024.
  57. Petrenko Volodymyr, a journalist and librarian from Malyn, Zhytomyr region, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died as a result of a mortar attack on 22 February 2024 near the village of Synkivka in Kharkiv region.
  58. Yakovenko Anton, an editorial director of the XSport TV channel, originally from Kirovohrad region, a mortar launcher of the 72nd separate brigade named after the Black Cossacks, died on 26 February 2024 near Vuhledar.
  59. Samchuk Oles, a graduate of the Institute of Journalism at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, originally from Rivne region, mobilised to the Armed Forces immediately after graduation in 2023, died during a combat mission on 11 March 2024 near Kreminna.
  60. Mykola Oranskyi, an engineer of the TLC at Hromadske, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, died during a combat mission on 22 March 2024 near Robotyno, Zaporizhzhia region.
