Power grid under pressure: why Kiev suddenly lost power outside of scheduled outages
12 January 15:17
In Kyiv, on the orders of NEC Ukrenergo, emergency power cuts have been introduced. This was reported by DTEK, emphasizing that hourly schedules are not applied in this mode, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Energy experts explain that emergency power cuts are introduced in the event of a sharp shortage of capacity or a threat to the stability of the power system. DTEK has promised to promptly inform consumers of any changes.
What is known
On the morning of January 12, the Ministry of Energy announced that Kyiv was gradually transitioning from emergency restrictions to predictable hourly schedules. However, the situation in the power grid has become more complicated again after new damage to infrastructure as a result of Russian attacks.
In particular, according to Chernihivoblenergo JSC, shelling damaged an important energy facility in the Novgorod-Siverskyi district of the Chernihiv region. As a result, a number of settlements were left without electricity.
“An important energy facility has been damaged as a result of Russian shelling. A number of settlements have been left without power,” the company said in a statement.
Odesa: power outages and destruction
At the same time, the consequences of the night attack are also reported in Odesa. According to the head of the Odesa City Military Administration, Serhiy Lysak, infrastructure facilities and residential buildings have been damaged in the city.
Part of the Peresypsky district is temporarily without power. Emergency crews are working to restore the networks. At the same time, heat, water supply, and sewage systems are functioning normally.
An operational headquarters has been set up at the site of the strike. Residents are being advised on how to obtain compensation under the “eRestoration” program and from the city budget. A warming center has also been opened, and utility workers are replacing broken windows.
On the night of January 11, an infrastructure facility was damaged in the Odesa region, leaving part of one of the districts without power. At that time, two people were reported injured and significant damage to the housing stock — one private house was completely destroyed, and several others were damaged.
Ukrenergo and energy companies are urging people to follow official announcements and be prepared for changes in the power supply.
