“An absolute mistake”: H.R. Biden speaks out sharply about Ukraine and criticizes US policy
25 December 22:41
The son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, has made harsh statements about Ukraine, calling it a “shithole” because of what he says is a high level of corruption. He said this in an interview with American podcaster Sean Ryan, where he also harshly criticized his father’s decisions, the policies of the administrations of Barack Obama and Donald Trump, as well as the US approach to migration, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
What he said about Ukraine
Mr. Biden returned to the topic of his work at Burisma Holdings, which he joined the board of directors in 2014, when his father was vice president of the United States.
According to him, he was “very naïve” about the realities of Ukrainian politics and the business environment:
“I was very, very naive about what a shithole Ukraine was. The level of corruption there is something that still amazes me. It was an absolute mistake,” Biden Jr. said.
He emphasized that he did not consider his actions to be illegal or to have created a conflict of interest, but admitted that it was the political context that made the decision toxic – especially for his family.
Why these words resonated again
For many years, Hunter Biden’s work at Burisma has been one of the key arguments of Joe Biden’s political opponents in the United States. Although no direct evidence of the former US president’s illegal influence has been established, this story has been regularly used in American domestic debates and investigations.
Biden Jr.’s new harsh wording could reignite the debate on this topic, particularly in the context of US aid to Ukraine and corruption risks.
Criticism of the Obama and Biden administrations
In the interview, Hunter Biden also spoke harshly about part of former President Barack Obama’s entourage, calling some of its representatives “disgusting hypocrites.” According to him, it was this environment that forced him to completely abandon lobbying activities after Joe Biden became vice president.
He described this period as financially difficult, in particular because of the need to support three children.
Mr. Biden also criticized his father’s decisions as president, focusing on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2021:
“It was an obvious fucking failure,” he said, mentioning the deaths of 13 US Marines.
Migration and the attack on the Trump administration
The son of the former president also touched on the topic of illegal immigration, saying that the United States does not need people who illegally cross the border and “deplete the country’s resources.”
At the same time, he sharply criticized the Trump administration, accusing it of enriching itself while in power:
“I would be surprised if Trump left the White House and the copper pipes were still in the walls,” he said.
Who is Hunter Biden?
Hunter Biden is a lawyer and businessman, a graduate of Georgetown University and Yale Law School. The greatest resonance around his name is associated with his work at Burisma in 2014-2019, where, according to American media, he received hundreds of thousands of dollars a year without any specialized experience in the energy sector.
He also spoke publicly about his longstanding struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. In 2023-2024, Hunter Biden became involved in criminal cases in the United States, including tax evasion and illegal possession of weapons, which further increased the political resonance around his personality.
