African swine fever has become a more serious blow to the Ukrainian meat industry than the war. This was stated in an interview with the YouTube channel [Kommersant] youTube channel, the head of the Meat Industry Association, Mykola Babenko, said.

“In 2024, only a few expert publications reported significant losses. In fact, there was a peso-epizootic in Ukraine associated with African swine fever. The market and the industry lost up to 40%. This is millions of pigs,” he said.

According to Babenko, these losses affect both industrial enterprises and the private sector. This has led to a serious shortage of raw materials for meat processing plants.

“Meat processing companies are actually focused on raw materials from the western regions. For example, they travel from Kharkiv region to Lviv or Ternopil regions to buy pigs,” the expert explained.

Babenko emphasized that concealment of the scale of the problem was one of the reasons for the rise in meat prices in Ukraine.

As reported by [Kommersant] in Ukraine, meat prices may rise by 10-20% by the end of the year.
