Farmers warned: bread will rise in price by 25%

Bread prices in Ukraine may rise by about 25%, but this is not due to a shortage of wheat. This was announced by the deputy head of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council (AAC) Denys Marchuk,
The main factors behind the rise in prices are rising energy costs, logistics, wages and inflationary pressures.
“It is very important to understand that farmers grow only grain, which is a raw material. And when we see ready-made bread on store shelves, it has already gone through a large number of production cycles. The price of grain accounts for no more than 20-25% of the cost of bread, and Ukraine has almost the same harvest this year as last year. Then, about 22 million tons of wheat were harvested, and now it is more than 21.8 million tons. For domestic needs, 6-7 million tons are enough, so there can be no shortage,” explained Mr. Marchuk.
According to him, the key factors behind the price increase are:
- Inflation in the food group, which is already about 22%;
- Rising costs of electricity, fuel and logistics;
- Increase in salaries for industry workers;
- Currency fluctuations, as most of the equipment for bakeries is imported.
“The costs of electricity, logistics and fuel for business are constantly growing, as is the need to raise wages. The dollar and euro exchange rate should also be taken into account, as the equipment for the factories is mostly imported. All of these factors shape the selling prices at bakeries much more than the cost of grain. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that bread is getting more expensive because of the harvest, as the main reason is the increase in business costs,” summarized the Deputy Head of the UBA.
