Abnormal heat in Ukraine: how to protect yourself from heat stroke

According to weather forecasters, Ukrainians will see a significant increase in temperature over the next few weeks. In many regions, thermometers will rise above 40 degrees. How to avoid becoming a victim of the heat and what to do in case of heatstroke, tells [Kommersant] with reference to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Heat stroke is a dangerous condition that occurs as a result of overheating and heat imbalance. It requires urgent medical attention.

What are the symptoms of heat stroke?

  • confusion, disorientation;
  • nausea and vomiting
  • severe headache
  • heart palpitations;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • dry and hot skin to the touch;
  • redness of the skin;
  • increased body temperature;
  • short-term loss of consciousness.

What should I do if I have a heat stroke?

The first thing to do is to call 103.

The victim should be moved to a shaded, cool place. Then you need to provide cooling. You can use wet towels (wipe the body with them) or ice packs (apply them to the neck, armpits, groin). If the person is conscious, you should give them small sips of cool water.

If the person is nauseous and vomiting, they should be turned on their side to avoid choking on vomit. In addition, the victim’s breathing and pulse should be monitored until an ambulance arrives.

How to avoid heat stroke

  • beware of excessive heat. Spend the hottest hours (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) in the shade or indoors;
  • avoid direct sunlight;
  • cool the room. Doctors advise opening windows at night and closing them during the day. You can hang a reflective film on the windows;
  • cool the body. Take a cool shower or wipe yourself with cool water as often as possible;
  • drink plenty of fluids. Drink water or other sugar-free and caffeine-free beverages regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty;
  • wear light, light, spacious clothes made of natural fabrics;
  • avoid physical activity in the heat. Limit physical activity during the hottest hours of the day;
  • monitor your health and the health of your loved ones;
  • do not leave children and animals in closed cars, even with the air conditioning on.
