Orange juice without oranges: what is changing in the Ukrainian beverage market
16 July 2025 22:10
Orange juice, one of the most popular breakfast drinks in the world, may disappear from the food market due to diseases of orange trees that provoked a citrus crop failure in 2025. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Bloomberg.
This year, the situation on the fruit market has reached a critical point: orange production in key regions, particularly in Florida, has fallen to its lowest level in 100 years. As a result, producers have started replacing some of the real fruit in juice with flavors, concentrates and biocomponents. The market is entering a new phase of adaptation to the shortage of natural raw materials.
The main reason for the decline in orange juice production is the citrus greening disease, or “yellowing of citrus trees.” Farmers consider it the most dangerous threat to orange orchards in the US and Brazil. The disease causes premature fruit fall, reducing their size and juiciness. No effective treatment exists.
The weather is also not an ally: in 2024-2025, cyclones, frosts and droughts hit orchards in Florida, which traditionally provided the bulk of oranges for US juice production. The result was the lowest yields in the history of orcharding and a sharp increase in the cost of fruit.
Industry response: fewer oranges in juices, but the taste remains the same
To preserve the taste and volume of products, producers have begun to use flavors, natural essences and fruit concentrates more actively. Orange juice now contains less and less natural juice and more and more artificial ingredients that mimic the taste familiar to consumers.
Such juices may be labeled “100% juice from concentrate” or “natural flavor added” on the packaging. However, in reality, the share of natural fruit in beverages is noticeably decreasing. According to Bloomberg, by the end of 2025, more products will appear on the market that, although called juices, have more flavor than nutritional value.
Prices are rising, consumption is falling
According to the Washington Post, the average retail price of concentrated orange juice in the United States in January 2025 reached $4.48 per 16 ounces (about 473 ml). This is a record for the last decade. At the same time, juice consumption in the United States has been declining for several years in a row by about 4% annually.
It’s not just the price that’s affecting it, but also the reorientation of consumer tastes. People are increasingly choosing drinks with additional benefits: functional waters, probiotic cocktails, natural smoothies with less sugar. Orange juice, which until recently was a symbol of a healthy lifestyle, is now often associated with high calorie content, high sugar levels, and excessive processing.

Less fruit – higher price: juice is getting more expensive, naturalness is disappearing
Amid the decline in natural raw materials, companies are faced with a choice: either to raise the price significantly or to adapt the recipe, sacrificing naturalness. Most choose the latter. This allows them to remain competitive, but at the same time creates reputational risks.
For the economy, this is a signal of the growing role of the flavoring, biotechnology, and agrochemicals industry in food production. Producers, suppliers, and distributors will increasingly focus not on the volume of the harvest, but on the ability to recreate the taste with chemical or bio-ingredients.
While scientists are developing disease-resistant varieties of orange trees, the beverage industry is changing the rules of the game. Traditional juice is becoming a premium product, and the mass market is moving away from functional surrogates. For businesses, this means an increased role for R&D, adaptive production lines, and a new marketing strategy.
