Russian attack: two regions completely without power

8 January 08:30

Russian occupation forces have launched another attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. As a result of the attack, the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions are almost completely without power. This was reported by the Ministry of Energy, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

They noted that critical infrastructure is functioning on backup power.

Some settlements are experiencing interruptions in heat and water supply as a result of the attack. In Dnipro and some settlements in the region, restoration work is continuing, taking into account the security situation, in order to restore heat and water to residents as soon as possible.

Repair crews are working around the clock, according to the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development.

In Zaporizhzhia, generators continue to be started up and cogeneration plants connected. Water supply is provided by alternative power sources.

Blackout in Dnipropetrovsk region

According to DTEK, emergency power cuts have been introduced in Dnipropetrovsk region due to the Russian attack.

Acting head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration Vladislav Gayvanenko said that as a result of the enemy attack, a critical infrastructure facility that provided power to most areas of the region was damaged.

“The situation is difficult. However, as soon as the security situation allows, energy companies will begin restoration work. In the meantime, you can recharge your gadgets, warm up, and get the necessary advice on security measures at the Points of Resilience organized in the region,” said Gayvanenko.

Also, according to Hayvanenko, due to the power outage in most settlements of the region, secondary schools have extended their vacations. They will last until January 9 inclusive.

The head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, Mykola Lukashuk, noted that there are no forecasts regarding the restoration of power supply in the region. He advises people to stock up on water.

He also warned that there may be problems with mobile communications.

Lukashuk reminded residents about national roaming, which allows them to switch between operators and use basic mobile communication services (calls and text messages).

According to Dnipro Mayor Boris Filatov, all the action plans developed in previous years are being implemented.

“All city hospitals have been completely switched to generators. There are sufficient water supplies. The treatment process continues. Water drainage in buildings is also supported by alternative power sources.

According to Filatov, electric transport in Dnipro will be replaced by buses as much as possible. To this end, the city will increase the number of buses on the routes.

Blackout in Zaporizhzhia

The head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration, Ivan Fedorov, said that 120 resilience centers have already begun operating in Zaporizhzhia.

At night, he reported that power had been restored to key facilities.

“Work is continuing on the supply of electricity, primarily to critical infrastructure facilities. We are working around the clock to restore power to all consumers as quickly as possible,” said the head of the Regional Military Administration.

Also, due to the large-scale power outage in the Zaporizhzhia region, mobile communications are operating in emergency mode.

According to Fedorov, all base stations have been switched to battery power, which will last for approximately 8 hours. At the same time, operators and local authorities are deploying generators to maintain communications in the future. Residents of the region are asked to limit their use of mobile communications unless absolutely necessary.

According to Fedorov, all boiler rooms are supplied with electricity and are operating normally.

“The reconnection from generators to the central power grid has been completed. Heat is still being supplied to homes,” he added.

How trains are running

Ukrzaliznytsia reported that all trains in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia are switching to backup traction. Train stations are also powered by generators.

Trains are departing with delays under reserve diesel locomotives:

  • 734 Kyiv — Dnipro
  • 37 Zaporizhzhia — Kyiv
  • 119 Dnipro — Kholm
  • 79 Dnipro — Lviv

Dnipro City Express trains will also be running under thermal traction.
