Audit of Energoatom: what the inspections revealed and what the consequences might be

20 February 21:43

An audit of the activities of the state-owned company NAEK Energoatom, the operator of all nuclear power plants in the country, is underway in Ukraine. This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko after a meeting with the head of the State Audit Service of Ukraine, Alla Basalayeva, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The audit is not yet complete, but auditors are already talking about possible violations in the areas of procurement and financial management.

What exactly is being audited

According to preliminary data, the analysis concerns:

  • excessive expenses related to risky operations;
  • shortcomings in determining the expected value of purchases;
  • possible overstatement of expenses for inventory;
  • the involvement of intermediaries in the supply of goods;
  • the legality of calculating salaries for company management.

Auditors separately verify whether these decisions complied with applicable laws and internal regulations of the enterprise.

Why is this important

Energoatom is a strategic company that produces more than half of Ukraine’s electricity. In the context of war and regular attacks on energy infrastructure, the issue of transparency in management and use of funds is of particular importance.

Any abuse or inefficient spending can affect not only the company’s financial condition, but also the country’s energy security.

Possible consequences

Based on the audit results, all identified violations must be legally assessed by law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies. If the facts are confirmed, those responsible may be held accountable.

At the same time, the final conclusions of the audit are still pending, and the company may provide its own explanations for the findings.
