Ballistic missile from Iran lands in Turkey: what are the consequences?

9 March 17:08

Today, March 9, Iran again launched a ballistic missile toward Turkey. This is the second attack on an ally in the last week.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the press service of the Turkish Ministry of Defense.

According to the ministry, the ballistic missile, which entered Turkish airspace after being launched from Iran, was destroyed by NATO air and missile defense systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Some of the debris fell on empty fields in the city of Gaziantep. According to preliminary information, no one was injured as a result of the incident, and no damage was reported.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense emphasized that the country attaches great importance to good neighborly relations and regional stability. At the same time, Ankara stated that it would respond decisively to any threats directed against its territory or airspace.

“We remind everyone that compliance with Turkey’s warnings in this regard is in everyone’s interest,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

First Iranian ballistic missile attack on Turkey

On March 4, Turkey reported the interception of a ballistic missile launched from Iran.

According to Ankara, the missile flew over the airspace of Iraq and Syria and was heading towards Turkey.

It was destroyed by NATO air defense forces deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean. Debris from the missile fell in the Hatay province. There were no casualties or injuries.

The next day, March 5, the Iranian General Staff officially denied launching a missile toward Turkey. Tehran allegedly emphasized its respect for the territorial integrity of its neighbor.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called the Iranian missile attack on Turkey a “serious incident,” but the Alliance does not plan to invoke Article 5 on collective armed response.
