Biden to veto law on aid to Israel without Ukraine

6 February 2024 16:33

US President Joe Biden will veto a separate bill that provides military assistance only to Israel without funding for support for Ukraine, if approved by Congress. This information is reported by Reuters, citing a statement from the White House

The statement noted that the administration urges Congress to reject the bill and quickly pass a bipartisan Emergency Supplemental National Security Appropriations Act to the president.

“The administration strongly urges both houses of Congress to reject this political gimmick and instead move bipartisan emergency supplemental national security appropriations legislation to the president’s desk as soon as possible,”

– the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement.

For several months, the Biden administration has been working with Senate Democrats and Republicans on a bill that includes reform of the US immigration system, additional funds for border security, and billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, Israel, and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

The statement said the administration opposes the bill, which it believes will not secure the border or support Ukraine against Putin’s aggression.

“The Administration strongly opposes this ploy, which does nothing to secure the border, does nothing to help the people of Ukraine defend themselves against Putin’s aggression, does not support the security of American synagogues, mosques, and vulnerable places of worship, and denies humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians, most of whom are women and children,” the statement said,

– the statement reads.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said the House would reject the bipartisan Senate bill and instead vote this week for a bill that provides aid only to Israel.

“The president’s threat to veto the bill is an act of treason. By threatening to veto aid to Israel and our military forces, President Biden is abandoning our ally in its time of greatest need,”

– said Johnson.

Delay in funding assistance to Ukraine

The US Congress has been unable to agree on a military aid bill for Ukraine since autumn 2023. President Joe Biden has proposed a national security bill worth more than $100 billion, including $61 billion to help Kyiv.

The document was not approved by Republicans, who want to include in the bill tighter border and migration measures on the US-Mexico border.

US President Joe Biden said he would not support the bill on aid to Israel initiated by Republicans in the House of Representatives without taking into account Ukraine’s needs.
