Biden to visit Germany this week: date set

The German government has officially confirmed that US President Joe Biden is expected to visit the country this week. According to the German news channel N-TV, the planned visit to Germany was confirmed by the government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“US President Joe Biden is planning to visit Germany at the end of the week,” the report said.
It is noted that the details of the visit are currently being worked out jointly by the governments of the two countries – Germany and the United States of America. At the same time, Büchner could not provide any details of the announced event.
“In fact, the state visit with full compliance with the protocol was scheduled for the end of last week, but Biden cancelled it at short notice due to the hurricane in the US. As a result, the summit in support of Ukraine at the US Air Force base in Ramstein was cancelled,” N-TV reported.
The German newspaper Bild, citing sources in the German government, reported that Biden would arrive in Berlin on Friday, 18 October.
Biden’s participation in the Ramstein meeting in October was announced during President Zelenskyy ‘s visit to the United States. At the time, this upcoming visit was presented as a powerful diplomatic breakthrough, and there was a lot of speculation in the media on this topic. Zelenskyy hinted at “powerful decisions”, and the media wrote about Biden’s possible decision to start pushing Ukraine towards NATO or a joint decision to authorise deep strikes against Russia.
Instead of a state visit, a much shorter working visit is now planned, Bild reports. The US president will meet with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

The short visit will continue to focus on the planned topics, including the continuation of joint Western support for Ukraine and the war in the Middle East.
In addition, according to media reports, Biden will receive from Steinmeier Germany’s highest award – the Grand Cross in a special version of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany – for services to US-German friendship.
Bild notes that Joe Biden’s visit to Germany will be a “farewell” visit – his term in the White House ends in January.
