Belgium refuses to seize Russia’s frozen assets

Belgium has refused to seize Russia’s frozen assets, demanding that the leaders of the European Union sign a pledge to share the kingdom’s financial risks. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever told reporters after arriving at the summit of the European Political Community, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing The Guardian.

“I told them that we need the signatures of the leaders of all EU countries under the obligation to sort out all financial risks,” the politician said.

There is no unanimity among EU countries on the seizure of Russian assets. In particular, the United Kingdom and Germany support the seizure of Russian funds, while France and Belgium oppose it.

At the opening of the EU leaders’ summit in Copenhagen on October 1, French President Emmanuel Macron said that when assets are frozen, international law must be respected. He recalled that De Wever had also spoken about this.

However, according to Reuters, on the evening of October 1, the EU countries reached an agreement in principle on the possibility of using frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a loan, but warned of the need to resolve legal issues.
