Without money or gold: Hungary returns stolen cash collection vehicles to Ukraine

12 March 15:18

The Hungarian authorities have agreed to return both seized cash transport vehicles to the state-owned Sberbank, but are keeping the cash and gold that they were carrying.

This was reported to European Truth by two sources familiar with the case, according to Komersant.

Investigators from the Hungarian National Tax and Customs Service, who were tasked by the government with conducting a formal investigation, informed the Ukrainian side’s lawyers of their intention to transfer the seized vehicles. The transfer is scheduled to take place on Thursday morning.

EuroPravda has no information about the condition of the vehicles. In particular, it is unclear what damage was caused during the break-in of the secure compartment (safe) in which the funds were being transported.

The gold and currency valuables illegally seized by the Hungarian authorities from the bank vehicles will remain in Hungary.

This is in accordance with the requirements of the law, which the Hungarian authorities urgently passed this week to create a legal basis for the confiscation of funds that ended up in the hands of the Hungarian special services after the robbery of two Oschadbank cash collection vehicles. This also provides for a specially adopted decision by the Orban government. The seizure of the vehicles was not mentioned in the documents adopted by the Hungarian authorities.

Earlier, President Zelensky called Hungary’s actions against the cash collectors and Oschadbank funds “banditry.” The NBU claims that Hungary has begun international blackmail of Ukraine.
