Without electricity and water: how residents of Dnipro cope with power cuts

8 January 11:17

Hundreds of thousands of residents of Dnipropetrovsk region are left without heat and water. School holidays have been extended in the city, and an alternative to electric transport has been found.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the official Telegram channel of Dnipro Mayor Boris Filatov.

School holidays extended

Due to the difficult situation in the power system, school holidays in Dnipro have been extended for another two days, until January 11. At the same time, all city hospitals have already switched to generator power, have water supplies, and continue to save lives without interruption.

Transport and points of invincibility

In the morning, electric transport in the city is operating intermittently, so it will be replaced as much as possible by additional buses. In addition:

  • there are about 130 columns with technical water in the city;
  • 89 resilience centers are ready to be deployed;
  • water drainage in buildings is supported by alternative power sources.

What is happening in the region

As of the morning of January 8, more than a million residents of Dnipropetrovsk region remain without heat and water. At the same time, in neighboring Zaporizhzhia, power supply has already been restored according to schedule.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Energy, about 800,000 consumers in Dnipropetrovsk region remain without electricity.

Social and critical infrastructure facilities have been partially restored. Eight mines were also left without power as a result of the attack.

The city authorities of Dnipro are applying proven algorithms and are in constant contact with energy companies to stabilize the situation.

Situation on the railway

Ukrzaliznytsia reported that after the attack in Zaporizhzhia, train traffic has been restored to normal, and in Dnipro, 100% of trains are running on backup power. Train stations in Dnipro and the region are being powered by generators.

However, Ukrzaliznytsia warns that there may be deviations from the timetable. Currently, the following delays are known:

  • No. 6008 Piatykhatky – Dnipro-Holovnyi is running from Zaporizhzhia-Kam’yanske station with a delay of 1 hour;
  • No. 7202 Kamyanske – Synelnykove-1 is running from Dnipro-Holovnyi station with a delay of more than 1 hour.

The press service of Ukrzaliznytsia: Suburban Trains emphasized that despite the difficult situation with energy supply, suburban traffic in the Dnipropetrovsk region has been maintained. Today, a number of suburban trains will run in the region, as well as Dnipro City Express trains:

  • No. 7202 Kamyanske-Pas. – Synelnykove-1;
  • No. 7201 Synelnykove-1 – Dnipro-Holovnyi.

As a reminder, on January 7, Russia almost completely cut off power to two regions of Ukraine – Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia. The Russians dealt another blow to the energy infrastructure. In particular, Dnipro was left in a complete blackout. All thermal power plants (TPPs) and substations in the region were shut down.
