Free roaming for Ukrainians in the EU extended for another year

The European Commission has approved a 12-month extension of an agreement with mobile operators that allows Ukrainians abroad to stay connected. This information was published on the website of the European Commission, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“The Commission welcomes the fifth extension for another twelve months of the voluntary agreement between 22 European and seven Ukrainian telecommunications operators to ensure that refugees from Ukraine can stay in touch across the border,”

– the statement said.

It is noted that this became possible thanks to the signatories, who pledged to mutually reduce their tariffs for connecting calls across the border.

The agreement will allow refugees to contact family and friends in Ukraine and vice versa.

The European Commission also called on other operators to join the agreement.

It should be noted that in April 2022, telecommunications operators from the EU and Ukraine signed a joint statement on coordinated efforts to ensure and stabilise affordable or free roaming and international calls between the EU and Ukraine for the first time.

In April 2023, the EU-Ukraine Association Committee adopted its proposal for Ukraine to accede to EU roaming rules.

Last month, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law on a single roaming area with the European Union.
