The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education and Science has recommended cancelling the production and awarding of gold and silver medals of the state standard in schools. This was announced on its Facebook page on her Facebook page mP Nataliia Pipa on her Facebook page.

“The Committee on Education, Science and Innovation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has recognised the centralised production of medals at the expense of the state budget as inappropriate. This outdated practice of medals is widespread in the post-Soviet space, including the Russian Federation. Let it stay there!” the MP said.

According to her, over 66,000 medals have been made in 5 years: in particular, this year twice as many were made as in 2020.

“Although the level of knowledge and the number of students has decreased. We conclude that the number of medals does not reflect the quality of education,” Pipa wrote.

The MP noted that initially, the budget for 2025 included a request for almost UAH 4.6 million for gold medals. And more than UAH 1 million for silver medals.

Despite this, as Pipa emphasised, in recent years, medals have not given any advantages when applying to a university.

It is worth noting that gold and silver medals used to give advantages when applying to higher education institutions, but now they are only relevant when applying to vocational education institutions.

“Kommersant Ukrayinsky has already sent a request to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine to confirm or deny the MP’s statement and to tell whether the graduates of 2025 should expect medals for excellent studies.
