Most Ukrainians believe that Russia is seeking to destroy the Ukrainian nation. This is evidenced by the results of a survey published by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), according to [Kommersant]
KIIS conducted an all-Ukrainian public opinion poll from 16 to 22 May 2024, in which 1,067 respondents from the territories controlled by Ukraine took part.
The survey showed that the majority of Ukrainians – 60% – believe that Russia is seeking to destroy the Ukrainian nation (34%) or even commit physical genocide of the majority of the population (26%).
According to the results, only 7% of Ukrainians believe that the aggressor seeks to retain the already occupied territories without claiming most of Ukraine’s territories. 5% of respondents support Russian propaganda about the “denazification” and demilitarisation of Ukraine without encroaching on its independence.

In the regional context, the opinion that Russia seeks to destroy the Ukrainian nation or commit genocide is as follows: West – 62%, Centre – 62%, South – 56%, East – 49%.
Russian-speaking Ukrainians were somewhat less likely to talk about Russia’s intentions to destroy the nation, but even among them, 62% believe that Russia has unrealised hostile intentions that it will continue to pursue (in particular, 37% believe that Russia seeks to destroy the Ukrainian nation or kill most Ukrainians). However, there is still a correlation between Russian-speaking and somewhat more positive expectations of Russia.
