Blackout in Berlin was a terrorist attack: left-wing extremists claimed responsibility

4 January 18:12

The ultra-left extremist group Volkskommando (Volcano Group) has claimed responsibility for the arson attack on a cable bridge in Berlin, which left tens of thousands of homes without electricity. A letter from the extremists was published online.

This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the German edition of Tagesschau.

It is noted that on the afternoon of January 4, security forces discovered a letter in which the far-left extremist group known as the Volcano Group claims responsibility for the attack. Experts from German law enforcement and state security agencies examined the letter and found it credible.

According to the State Security Department of the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), the letter contains a number of details that only the participants in the attack could have known. And the method of attack is consistent with the one used by extremists when attacking energy facilities. The investigation, however, is ongoing, as there is no accurate information about the attackers.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said at a briefing on January 4 that the arson attack on the cable bridge over the Teltow Canal was “unacceptable” and that the perpetrators were “clearly left-wing extremists.”

“It is unacceptable that clearly left-wing extremists are once again attacking our power grid and thus endangering human lives,” he said.

As a reminder, a large-scale power outage occurred in the southwestern part of Berlin on Saturday, January 3. More than 45,000 households were left without electricity after a fire on a cable bridge. It was previously reported that unknown extremists may be involved in the incident.
