The Beaver Supermoon will approach the Earth: when and how to watch the brightest lunar show of the year
3 November 21:57
On the evening of November 5, Ukrainians will be able to see one of the most spectacular astronomical phenomena of the year – the Beaver Supermoon. This is the moment when the Moon is at the minimum distance from the Earth during a full moon, so it appears larger and brighter than usual, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Details of the event
According to the Associated Press, the Moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical, so the distance between them changes. When the full moon coincides with the moment of closest approach, observers on Earth see a so-called supermoon.
According to NASA, November’s Beaver Supermoon will look 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. This time, the Moon will approach at a distance of less than 357 thousand kilometers, the shortest distance in 2025.
Why “Beaver”?
The name comes from an ancient North American tradition. The November full moon was called Beaver Moon, a period when beavers were actively preparing their lodges for winter, and hunters set traps before the rivers froze.
How to watch
You can see the supermoon without any special equipment – the main thing is that the sky is clear. The best time to watch is after sunset, when the Moon rises above the horizon. Although the visual difference with a “normal” full moon is insignificant, the effect will be more noticeable with a camera or binoculars.
What’s next
The November supermoon will be the second of three this year, and at the same time the closest to Earth. The next one, the December supermoon, is expected in a month, completing the cycle of bright floods in 2025.
In the longer term, NASA is preparing for the Artemis 2 mission, during which astronauts will fly around the Moon. The launch is scheduled for February 5, 2026
