The Naftogaz Group has finally prevailed in a legal dispute with the Russian company Gazprom over the payment of a $1.4 billion debt for gas transit.

According to [Kommersant], the Group’s press service reported this.

“The Swiss Federal Supreme Court has fully rejected Russian Gazprom’s motion to overturn the arbitration award dated June 16, 2025, under which the Russians must pay Naftogaz over $1.4 billion in debt for natural gas transportation services plus interest,” the statement reads.

The court also ordered the Russian company to pay court costs of 200,000 Swiss francs and to reimburse Naftogaz 250,000 Swiss francs for expenses incurred in the proceedings before the Federal Supreme Court.

“Thus, Switzerland’s highest court has confirmed the validity of the arbitral award and definitively rejected the Russian side’s arguments. “Naftogaz will continue to work on the enforcement of this decision and is pursuing a number of other proceedings against the aggressor country,” commented Serhiy Koretskyi, Chairman of the Board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine.

Naftogaz was obligated to organize the transit of natural gas through Ukrainian territory for Gazprom until the agreement expired on January 1, 2025. After the start of the full-scale invasion and the suspension of gas transit through the Sokhranivka entry point, transit was provided through the Sudzha entry point. Despite this, Gazprom refused to pay the full fee for organizing gas transportation, thereby violating its contractual obligations.

As reported, in June 2025, an international arbitration tribunal hearing the case in Switzerland ordered PJSC Gazprom to pay $1.37 billion to NJSC Naftogaz.

In September 2022, Naftogaz of Ukraine initiated arbitration proceedings against the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom. The subject of the arbitration was the fee for organizing the transportation of natural gas through Ukrainian territory, which Gazprom failed to pay on time and in full.
