Ukraine may soon face a new problem – a shortage of imported electricity from neighbouring countries. This was announced by Yuriy Boyko, advisor to the Prime Minister and member of the Supervisory Board of NPC Ukrenergo, reports [Kommersant].
According to the official, the possibilities of neighbouring European countries to import electricity to Ukraine are currently limited due to the growth of domestic consumption in the heat.
“Based on the analysis of the seasonal load in the system and the expected schedules for the restoration of generating equipment after the Russian attacks, power engineers predicted that June and July would be the most difficult months in the power system. Unfortunately, no miracle happened. The temperature – you can see what it was. This led to a higher load in the system and, accordingly, to significant restrictions,” said Yuriy Boyko.
He added that Ukraine imports the maximum amount of electricity not even every day. The reason is the hot weather, which makes donor countries use more electricity. However, NPC Ukrenergo reaches this maximum level by attracting emergency assistance from our neighbours by activating the relevant requests.
Yuriy Boyko explained that there is a significant difference between imports and emergency requests. Imports are a guaranteed flow of electricity, while emergency assistance requested by NPC from neighbouring system operators is provided only if they are able to provide such assistance.
The Prime Minister’s Advisor also said when the situation with electricity could be expected to improve. According to him, it is the 20th of July. That is when the repair of generating equipment will be completed and the air temperature will drop significantly.
