UK blocks assets of ‘Russian World’ ideologue Dugin and Russian propagandists: what is known

10 December 02:45

The United Kingdom has announced a new package of sanctions against seven individuals and legal entities from Russia. Among the defendants is one of the key ideologues of Russian imperialism and the “Russian world,” Alexander Dugin. This is stated in the updated sanctions list, published on December 9, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The sanctions are aimed at the Russian propaganda machine and structures that support Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Who exactly was affected by the British sanctions

London has imposed restrictions on:

  • Alexander Dugin, the main ideologist of the “Russian world”;
  • The Center for Geopolitical Studies, founded by Dugin;
  • propaganda resources: Euromore, Golos,
  • Telegram channel “Rybar”;
  • Mykhailo Zvinchuk, the founder of Rybar;
  • the Russian Foundation for the Protection and Support of the Rights of Compatriots Abroad.

All these individuals and organizations received a standard package of restrictions:

  • freezing of assets in the UK
  • a ban on entering the country
  • a ban on conducting any economic activity with British entities.

This means that they cannot use financial services, move freely or do business in the United Kingdom.

Who is Alexander Dugin and why is he on the sanctions list?

For more than a decade, Alexander Dugin has been a key propagandist for the idea of the “Russian world” and the revanchist expansion of the Russian Federation.

He systematically

  • denies the existence of Ukraine as a state,
  • calls for the seizure of Ukrainian territories by force,
  • publicly supports Russian aggression,
  • justifies war crimes and attacks on civilian infrastructure.

After the start of the full-scale invasion, Dugin became one of the loudest voices of Russian propaganda, calling for escalation and genocidal actions against Ukrainians.

Daria Dugina’s case: why it is mentioned in the context of sanctions

In August 2022, a car carrying Daria Dugina, the daughter of Alexander, who shared his anti-Ukrainian views, exploded in the Moscow region. She died on the spot.

Russian propaganda blamed Ukraine for the explosion:

  • The President’s Office denied any involvement;
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine does not carry out terrorist attacks in Russia.

After the death of his daughter, according to Russian media, Dugin’s influence on Putin allegedly increased, making him a target for Western sanctions.

Why sanctions against Dugin are important

Sanctions are aimed not only at punishing propagandists, but also at

  • weakening Russia’s information warfare,
  • blocking the financing of pro-Russian networks,
  • limiting the spread of disinformation in Europe.

The ideology promoted by Dugin is at the heart of Russia’s aggression, so sanctions pressure on him is an important political signal.
