Britain to provide Ukraine with over $17 billion in military aid: new technologies and drones

21 February 05:15

The United Kingdom has pledged to provide Ukraine with £13 billion in military aid. This was announced by Luke Pollard, Minister of State at the UK Ministry of Defense, after a meeting of defense ministers from the E5 countries (Poland, the UK, Germany, France, and Italy) in Krakow, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Ukrinform.

This is one of the largest military aid programs for Ukraine among European partners and an important signal of long-term support in the context of the war with Russia.

How much aid will Britain provide to Ukraine?

According to Luke Pollard, the UK has already committed to providing Ukraine with more than £13 billion in military aid.

In dollar terms, this amounts to over $17 billion.

“We will stand with Ukraine as the United Kingdom, as the E5, as NATO members, for as long as it takes,” Pollard said.

This aid includes:

  • funding for weapons
  • the supply of military technology
  • training Ukrainian military personnel
  • production of new drone interception systems
  • development of joint defense programs.

Britain launches mass production of Octopus interceptors

Particular emphasis is placed on the production of the latest Octopus interceptors, which are designed with the experience of the war in Ukraine in mind.

These systems allow:

  • effectively shoot down Russian drones
  • protect critical infrastructure
  • strengthen air defense

According to a representative of the British Ministry of Defense, the interceptors are already being mass-produced in the UK.

New LEAP initiative: cheap drones instead of expensive air defense systems

A key element of the cooperation is the LEAP initiative, which is being implemented by the E5 countries:

  • Great Britain
  • Germany
  • France
  • Italy
  • Poland

The goal of the program is to create:

  • autonomous drones
  • cheaper alternatives to expensive air defense systems
  • modern defense technologies.

This will enable Ukraine to defend itself more quickly and effectively against Russian attacks.

Europe is stepping up its military support for Ukraine

The E5 format brings together Europe’s leading defense powers, which have taken responsibility for the continent’s security.

According to Luke Pollard, the new defense programs are aimed at:

  • deterring Russia
  • strengthening NATO’s defense capabilities
  • developing modern military technologies.

“It is actions, not words, that will deter Putin,” said the British Defense Ministry representative.

Britain has confirmed its long-term support for Ukraine

London emphasized that its support for Ukraine will remain stable and long-term.

Pollard stressed that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine has been going on for almost five years, and the allies continue to strengthen their defenses.

“Putin thought he would win this war in three days. He was wrong. Ukraine continues to fight with tremendous courage,” he said.

What this aid means for Ukraine

The allocation of more than $17 billion in military aid means:

  • strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities
  • an increase in the number of modern weapons
  • the development of Ukraine’s own military technologies
  • strengthening of air defense systems
  • improved security for critical infrastructure.

This also confirms that Britain remains one of Ukraine’s key allies in the war against Russia.
