Britain has changed its mind: there will be no peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine

14 August 13:00

The United Kingdom has significantly “scaled back” its plans to deploy peacekeeping forces in Ukraine after a possible ceasefire was reached. The British military leadership has abandoned the original idea of deploying a 30,000-strong contingent to protect Ukrainian ports and cities. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to The Time.

Instead, London is proposing a “realistic mission” that would include air cover for the western regions of Ukraine, support in training Ukrainian troops, and de-mining the Black Sea. The change was prompted by European allies’ concerns about the risks of a large-scale deployment.

At the same time, Starmer, without batting an eye, emphasized the readiness of the “coalition of the willing” to ensure compliance with any ceasefire agreement. He emphasized that international borders cannot be changed by force.

A new concept

The new concept of the “enabling force” envisions the deployment of logistics, weapons, and training experts to help rebuild Ukraine’s ground forces. Training will take place in the western part of the country, where the military is less likely to come under fire.

The air patrols will be conducted by Typhoon or F-35 fighter jets, which will control Ukrainian airspace and deter Russian attacks. The purpose of such missions will be to reassure the Ukrainian population and resume international flights.

A separate area of the coalition’s work will be to clear the Black Sea of mines and ensure the safe passage of all ships to Ukrainian ports. This is critical for the recovery of Ukraine’s economy after the conflict.

“Strong sanctions”

Starmer emphasized his readiness to increase pressure on Russia through “strong sanctions” and other economic measures. The UK is preparing new sanctions packages and is also insisting on the confiscation of 260 billion euros of frozen Russian assets, although the EU is still resisting.

Starmer has publicly supported Trump’s efforts, calling his upcoming meeting with Putin the first real opportunity to reach a viable solution in three and a half years of conflict. At the same time, European leaders are privately nervous about President Zelenskyy being excluded from the upcoming meeting.

The role of the United States in the future support force remains unclear, but it has been confirmed that the coalition will not deploy troops to the front lines. And European countries fear that even a reduced contingent may not be enough to deter Putin’s possible attacks.
