British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signed the Kensington Treaty in London, the largest bilateral agreement between these countries since 1945.
This is reported by the BBC, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
The main focus of the treaty is on the field of security. In particular, the parties agreed to develop a new system of long-range missiles Deep Precision Strike with a range of more than 2000 kilometers. Its development is planned for the next decade and will be accompanied by “significant industrial investments” in the military-industrial sectors of both countries.
The agreement also contains a provision on mutual security support: a threat to either side is likely to be seen as a threat to both.
In addition to defense, the document covers trade, transport and the fight against illegal migration – as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of Brexit. In particular, Germany is expected to pass legislative changes that would make it a criminal offense to facilitate illegal migration to the UK. These changes are expected to be approved by the end of 2025, according to representatives from Keir Starmer’s office.
According to Bloomberg, the countries will also announce more than £200 million (about $268 million) of commercial investment as part of the new cooperation.
