UK to allocate another €23 million to restore Ukraine’s power system

The United Kingdom has announced an additional contribution to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine in the amount of £20 million (€23 million). This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
The funds will be used to purchase equipment to repair damaged energy infrastructure, strengthen physical protection and provide backup power, including generators and distributed generation.
“The enemy continues to destroy the Ukrainian energy sector. The assistance of our partners is essential to carry out repairs, restore damaged facilities and increase manoeuvring capacities for the next heating season,”
– said Herman Galushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine.
The UK’s contributions to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund have already reached €50 million. The total amount of contributions to the Fund has reached over EUR 433 million.
It should also be noted that recently, the UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron met with Herman Galushchenko in Kyiv. During the meeting, the parties announced the launch of the first 13 innovative energy projects under the InnovateUkraine programme. The UK Government will provide £16 million in funding for these projects.
Attacks on energy infrastructure
On the night of 8 May, Russia launched its fifth massive missile and drone strike against Ukraine’s energy sector since 22 March.
Ukrenergo reported damage to its generation facilities. In particular, Russian troops attacked three thermal power plants owned by DTEK.
Power outages occurred in Dnipropetrovs’k, Donetsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Kharkiv and Sumy regions. During the morning peak hours, Ukraine requested emergency electricity supplies from the power systems of Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
It was also reported earlier that in the evening from 18:00 to 23:00, there may be restrictions on electricity supply to household and industrial consumers across Ukraine. The restrictions will be evenly distributed across all regions.
