Partial recovery of Odesa coast after oil spill: where beaches are still polluted

As of December 26, 2025, the Black Sea near Odesa shows a noticeable decrease in pollution from vegetable oil that got into the sea after Russia’s attack on Odesa region ports. At the same time, the beaches remain polluted in some areas of the coast. This was reported by the Odesa City Council, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Beaches with positive changes
According to visual observations, the following areas have been cleaned up:
- Lanzheron
- Vidrada
- Dolphin
- The area of the 16th station of the Big Fountain
Beaches where pollution remains
Oiled beaches remain:
- Santorini
- Arcadia
- Inclusive beach of the 11th station of the Big Fountain
- 15th station of the Big Fountain
- The area near the YUG restaurant
Localization and cleanup measures
Boom barriers were installed to localize oil spills. Oil residues were collected with absorbent materials and napkins. Sand cleaning on the beaches.
Causes of the pollution
The pollution occurred after the Russian attack on the container terminals of the Pivdenne port, during which vegetable oil and combustion products entered the Black Sea.
Current status and prospects
The partial cleanup of the beaches demonstrates the effectiveness of localization and cleanup measures. However, the full restoration of the coast is still ongoing, and the contaminated areas remain under the supervision of municipal services.
