The future of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in question due to the scandal surrounding the appointment of financier Jeffrey Epstein’s friend as ambassador to the US, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Bloomberg.
According to anonymous sources, some Downing Street staff privately urged members of the UK Cabinet to persuade the prime minister to resign or threatened to resign themselves if Starmer did not step down. According to one of the minister’s aides in the government, the chances that the prime minister will remain in office until the end of the week are 50-50.
Another source reported that Starmer himself was considering whether he could continue working after the dismissal of his chief of staff, Morgan Maxwine. It was Maxwine who organized the prime minister’s party’s triumphant victory in the 2024 elections.
“Even if Starmer manages to survive the Mandelson controversy, his position will be under threat in the coming weeks,” Bloomberg notes.
The day before, British Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Morgan Maxwine resigned over the scandal surrounding the appointment of financier Jeffrey Epstein’s friend as ambassador to the United States. In his resignation statement, the official called Mandelson’s appointment a mistake and took responsibility for it. According to political commentator Beth Rigby, Maxwine is trying to save the prime minister by resigning.
