Moldova has been affected by Russia’s attacks on Ukraine: what is known
24 March 10:15
Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have disrupted Moldova’s key energy connection to the European power grid. The country is currently forced to use alternative electricity supply routes. She reported this on the social media platform X, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
What happened to Moldova’s power grid
According to Maia Sandu, Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have consequences not only for Ukraine but also for neighboring countries.
“Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure are a war crime and an attack on all of us. The nighttime strikes severed Moldova’s key energy link with Europe,” the president stated.
She also emphasized that Moldova is already using alternative energy supply channels, but the situation remains unstable.

Why Moldova Depends on Ukraine’s Power Grid
After the start of the full-scale war in 2022, the power grids of Ukraine and Moldova were urgently synchronized with the European ENTSO-E network to enhance energy security.
Prior to this, both countries operated within the post-Soviet power grid alongside Russia and Belarus.
European integration has made it possible to:
- import electricity from the EU
- stabilize the grid during attacks
- reduce dependence on Russian energy resources.
Why attacks on Ukraine affect Moldova
Moldova’s power grid is closely linked to Ukraine’s, so any serious damage to Ukrainian infrastructure can cause outages in the region.
Russia has been systematically attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since 2022, leading to the loss of significant generating capacity and periodic grid stability issues.
Have similar incidents occurred before?
Similar problems have occurred before. For example:
- in January 2026, large-scale power outages in Ukraine caused blackouts in Moldova as well due to problems with high-voltage lines
- at that time, power was restored within a few hours.
Also, in 2022, due to Russian attacks, Ukraine was forced to temporarily suspend electricity exports to Europe.
Why the situation remains unstable
Experts note that the main risks are associated with:
- continued attacks by Russia
- the limited number of cross-border power lines
- Moldova’s high dependence on electricity imports.
Moldova effectively imports most of its energy resources and is actively working to diversify its supply following its decision to abandon Russian resources.
Thus, the disruption of Moldova’s power connection with the EU was a consequence of Russian attacks on the Ukrainian power grid. Similar situations have occurred before, confirming the vulnerability of regional energy infrastructure during wartime.
