Due to Russian strikes, conditions for crossing the border with Moldova have changed: what you need to know

20 December 05:15

New rules for crossing the Ukrainian-Moldovan border in the direction of Odesa region have been introduced. The reason for this was the damage to the bridge in the Mayak area as a result of Russian shelling, as well as engineering works and changes in the logistics of traffic. This was reported by the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova, which published updated information on the operation of key checkpoints, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Why did they change the rules for crossing the border?

A bridge near the village of Mayaki in Odesa region was damaged by Russian strikes. To ensure communication across the Dniester River, a temporary pontoon crossing was set up in this area, which has a limited capacity.

That is why the border services of both countries were forced to impose restrictions on the categories of citizens and the weight of vehicles that can cross the border in this direction.

How the checkpoints work now

According to the official information of the Moldovan border guards, the border crossing regime currently looks like this:

  • Tudora-Starokozache checkpoint

in the direction of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, traffic is allowed for all categories of travelers;

there are no restrictions.

  • Movement towards Odesa region

is allowed only for citizens of Ukraine;

passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons are allowed.

  • Palanca – Mayaki – Udobne checkpoint

exit from Moldova through this checkpoint is allowed only for citizens of Ukraine heading to Odesa;

only passenger cars weighing up to 3.5 tons are allowed to cross.

Freight transport is temporarily not allowed at this section.

Recommendations for travelers

The Moldovan Border Police urges citizens to

  • if possible, refrain from traveling in this direction;
  • plan alternative routes to avoid queues and traffic jams;
  • closely follow the official messages of the border services.

These recommendations are due to the limited capacity of the pontoon crossing and the risk of traffic congestion.

Restrictions on the Odesa-Reni highway

Earlier, the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Oleh Kiper, said that traffic on the Odesa-Reni highway was suspended due to Russian attacks. In particular, trucks were temporarily banned, which further affected logistics in the region.
