Why Anthony Blinken and David Lammy are coming back to Ukraine: a forecast

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy are due to visit Kyiv this week. Prior to that, Blinken visited London, where he confirmed, among other things, that Iran had transferred missiles to Russia. It is not known what the officials in Ukraine will discuss. So is the purpose of the visit. Official reports are limited to dry information – confirmation that the visit will take place and who official Kyiv is expecting.
In an exclusive commentary [Kommersant] political expert Volodymyr Fesenko expressed his assumptions about the purpose of the visit of US officials to Ukraine.
“They are likely to discuss the lifting or partial lifting of restrictions on strikes by Western long-range weapons against Russian targets. This topic is currently under active negotiation, while the American position is rather negative, although there was a partial permission several months ago for strikes on the border regions of Russia,” the political expert said.
According to Volodymyr Fesenko, Blinken and Lemmy are also coming to Kyiv, among other things, to meet the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiga.
“Another goal is purely practical – they need to meet the new Foreign Minister of Ukraine. After all, they will have to work with him in the future,” the political analyst said.
Apparently, Blinken’s visit to Ukraine was planned in advance, but it was not publicly announced.
“It is known that a visit of the President of Ukraine to the United States is being prepared, in particular to meet with Biden. And such things are planned in advance. Our delegation has already travelled to the United States: Rustem Umerov was engaged in negotiations with the US Secretary of Defence, Andriy Yermak was involved not only in negotiations but also in the preparation of this visit, coordinating a meeting with Biden, and probably with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Of course, Blinken also has to agree on when and how the meeting can take place, and what it should be about,” said Volodymyr Fesenko.
In general, the expert emphasises, such a joint visit to Kyiv by Lemmy and Blinken is very important for Ukraine, as it is another signal of the high level of support for our country from our Western partners.
It should be noted that on 10 September, Anthony Blinken said the following: US President Biden will meet with British Prime Minister Starmer on Friday, 13 September. The officials will discuss allowing the Ukrainian Defence Forces to strike deep into Russia.
