Why the number of power outages in Ukraine has increased: power engineers explain

21 November 10:12

The number of hours without electricity has increased significantly in Ukraine. Serhiy Kovalenko, CEO of Yasno, explained why this is happening, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Kovalenko said that the enemy is attacking not only the plants but also the networks. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly difficult to deliver electricity from operating nuclear power plants. He reminded that during the last massive attack on the energy infrastructure, 7 regions were under attack, resulting in:

  • 3 NPPs reduced their capacity due to damaged networks;
  • 2 NPPs have been operating with reduced generation since the beginning of November, and after the last shelling, they lost another high-voltage line;
  • 1 NPP lost part of its external connection.

“As a result, we have 4 reactors out of 9 operating at reduced power. This is compounded by the need to carry out repair work on a number of lines. And given the cold snap, the load on the power system is only increasing,” Kovalenko states.

He assures that power engineers work 24/7 and do their best to provide more light every day. But with each shelling it becomes more difficult.

At the same time, DTEK explained that the massive power outages in Ukraine in recent days were caused by Russian strikes on the energy sector. The Russian army has been hitting not only generation but also power transmission systems, which is why the electricity produced cannot be supplied to consumers.

As a reminder, on November 21, hourly power outage schedules will be introduced across Ukraine. The restrictions are being introduced due to the consequences of massive missile and drone attacks that have caused significant damage to the energy infrastructure in recent days.
